It was an ordinary Saturday in December. Marlin was working on one of his airplane projects, then he took his Cessna up for a short flight. Approaching a nearby airport, the plane lost power. As the engine stalled at an altitude of 300 feet, he attempted an emergency crash landing in a cornfield.
Marlin and his wife, Jeanie, are grateful that God spared his life in the crash, and his passion to be used by God for the Kingdom has only increased.
Marlin and Jeanie Horst are business leaders and long-time friends of Global Disciples and Marlin serves on the Global Board. At the time of the accident, Marlin and Jeanie were unaware they had been selected as the 2019 Handoko Business Leaders of the Year. This award honors global business leaders who are passionate and generous in their partnership to reach the least-reached. In July, Global Disciples invited friends, family, and Global leaders to celebrate and honor the Horsts with this award.
Marlin spoke passionately about the value of bringing business leaders into the work of reaching people with the Gospel.
“Sometimes we take business leadership for granted,” he said, “but the world is a different place because of business leaders who live out their faith in the marketplace. When you walk with business leaders who have been raised up in places in the world that don’t look anything like places we were raised in, and without the resources and infrastructure we have, it is eye opening. When we asked what God is telling them about running their businesses, they could not get done talking about it!”
Marlin supports Global’s strategic focus on building national leaders and foundations and finding ways to allow business leaders to meet and encourage each other. He said, “Global Disciples’ national foundations are built on the efforts of these business leaders. When they get together, it’s a different conversation. Let’s not be bashful that God has ordained us to be His influence in the marketplace.”
Jeanie and Marlin continue to look for new opportunities to connect with business leaders around the world. His recovery continues; Marlin is still facing several surgeries. Jeanie reflected, “If there is anything that stands out to me since the accident, it’s the prayers of so many people around the globe, and the encouragement that brings us.”
As Global Disciples, we are grateful for the passion of partners like the Horsts. May God continue to bless Marlin, Jeanie, and so many business leaders like them, here and in every nation, as they do their part in fulfilling the Great Commission.
