In the Name of Jesus: Authority vs Power

Authority In the Name of Jesus

The name of Jesus is invoked by Christians worldwide when we pray, give thanks, fight the enemy and cry out for healing. But do we really understand why we do this?

This first message in the series “In the Name of Jesus”, was taught by Paul Wartman at our annual staff retreat in Thailand this past May 2017 and was an incredible blessing then! It will also be taught by regional facilitators at the 21 Annual Equipping Events during Jan-April 2018, as an encouragement to the 1000+ program directors currently running disciple-making programs globally, among least-reached people.

On the topic of spiritual authority in this message, Paul reveals a profound truth.

Why everywhere in Global are we talking about, “Intimacy with God”? Because that’s where authority comes from. Authority does not come from how loud you can shout when we pray. Authority does not come from experience. Authority does not come from how much we know or how many people agree with us. No, authority comes from our walk with God and the closer you are intimate with the Lord, the greater your authority.

The following is a longer excerpt from the message transcript:

Mark 9. “Teacher,” this man says, “I brought my son who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of his speech. Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground, he foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit but they could not.”

Now what’s the answer? Were they lacking power? No. How do we know? Because Jesus’ answer has nothing to do with the power that was not flowing through his disciples.

“And he says, ‘How long will I put up with an unbelieving generation? Bring the boy to me.’ When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion, he fell to the ground, thrashed around foaming at the mouth and Jesus said to the boy’s father, ‘How long has he been like this?’ ‘From childhood’, he answered.”

Can you imagine? From childhood. How did that evil spirit get into that family and into that little boy?

And the father says, “If you can… can you heal my boy?”, Jesus said, “If I can? If I can?”

The boy’s father immediately replied, “I believe, I believe. Help me overcome my unbelief.” Jesus saw a crowd running and he did not want this to be a sensational display. And so what did you do? He quickly confronted the demon, he cast it out of the boy. The demon left the boy with a loud shriek and then the question, “Why were your disciples not able to do this?” And the disciples came back to this and they asked Jesus, “Why could we not do this?” What was Jesus answer? This kind of spirit comes out through? Prayer and fasting. What is he saying?

That’s where we need to learn about what authority is.

Authority, EXOUSIA, is not something that is given as a gift and flows through us and out of us, that’s power. Power, that is the work of the Holy Spirit. Authority comes to us through relationship. Think about anybody that has authority, anybody who is a leader. Whether a national leader, a political leader, a spiritual leader or a family leader. Anyone who is in a position of authority has that authority by relationship, just as a king receives authority through the lineage of the royal family. A political leader receives authority through the process of election or appointment, however the country works. A spiritual leader receives authority by relationship! With who? Number one, relationship is with God. The authority that the Lord has  given to you and to me is through our relationship with him. And the greater the authority, the greater the intimacy.

Why do we say, why are we always talking about our first, of the nine central components? Why everywhere in Global are we talking about, “Intimacy with God”? Because that’s where authority comes from. Authority does not come from how loud you can shout when we pray. Authority does not come from experience. Authority does not come from how much we know or how many people agree with us. No, authority comes from our walk with God and the closer you are intimate with the Lord, the greater your authority.

What is authority? Authority is the ability in the name of Jesus to take down and break bondage, to confront and dismiss the powers of darkness, to overcome the work of the enemy the evil one. It is authority that does that, it is not our power.
